Family Physicians deliver a large range of acute, chronic and preventive medical care services for both adults and children. In addition to the diagnosing and treating of illness, they also provide preventive care, including health-risk assessments, routine check-ups, immunization (including travel advice) and screening tests. The modern focus of Family Medicine is health promotion, this is achieved by the early detection of disease or risk factors and provision of personalized counselling on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Family physicians also manage chronic illness often coordinating care provided by other subspecialists. The Family Physician (General Practitioner) should remain at the centre of the care of all patients, maintaining a holistic view of both patient and family.
